Back again with media consumption

Oh goodness, it has been a while again... That is so typically me, I'm afraid.

I will start with a quick recap of today. I went to a coffee shop by the beach this afternoon to relax. I also watched the first episode of the new Ranma 1/2 anime on Netflix. I've never seen the original (save for a commercial for one of the movies at the end of one of my Pokemon VHS tapes back in the day), but as someone who got into anime at the tail end of the 90s, I was of course aware of it and knew the general premise. I enjoyed the first episode, and can definitely see why it was so popular as the characters and their interactions are fun.

I watched the first episode of Nobody Wants This as well, which was cute! I love Kristen Bell so much. ♥

A while back, I watched the first season of the Interview with the Vampire series and loved it.

Hope to be back with more when my brain isn't so tired!

The Friday Five

Wow, August 11th already?

1. Do you want to get married?

Yes? I always thought I would because I grew up surrounded by people who married young. I just assumed that it would happen easily and effortlessly for me, but obviously that didn't happen. Honestly, I'm glad that it didn't happen earlier because I have changed so much since my 20s and my mental health was not in a good place during many of those years. I could have so easily fallen into a bad relationship (if I put myself out there, which I didn't), and I was aware of it even then. I would still like to, but I've seen so many crappy marriages that I feel trepidation. Still, if the right person comes along...

2. Where would you like to get married?

Somewhere outside where there's trees and greenery. Places like that fill me with peace.

3. If you were getting married in a week, who would be in your wedding party?

Honestly, that is my biggest concern because I really don't know.

4. What would your wedding colours be?

Never thought of it.

5. Does marriage mean to you 'til death do us part?'

Generally yes, but not if it's detrimental to either partner. I don't want anyone to be stuck with jerks or abusers.

Wow, the song that's playing is oddly fitting. XD

Throwback Thursday

I just noticed this updated playlist on Spotify. It updates every week, but this week they are featuring songs that turn 25 years old in 2023.

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/37i9dQZF1DWWwaxRea1LWS?si=be3c2cc2e5304046

There's a lot of good stuff here! We've got "...Baby One More Time" by Britney Spears, "believe" by Cher, "One Week" by Barenaked Ladies, "Crush" by Jennifer Paige, and "Frozen" by Madonna to name a few of my favorites. They are all really nostalgic and make me miss the late 90s. For reference, I was in mid to late elementary school when these songs came out. I feel old now.

Okay, that was enlightening, and I was happily surprised with many of the results! I wasn't sure how it would make me feel about my writing, but surprisingly, it made me feel better about it. I still want to write more, though.

Choir!

I got up way too early this morning, but I'm holding up surprisingly well considering that I didn't go to bed early last night even though I was exhausted. However, I may be getting a cold. It's either that or allergies. Either way, I should take it easy because I am supposed to be singing with my social justice choir on Saturday for our concert.

Speaking of which, I had a rehearsal with them last night--that's why I was tired. I feel like in the few months since my semester ended that I've forgotten how to be around other people who I don't know well, and my social anxiety has been acting up again. Still, I think that I did pretty well overall, and I'm trying to give myself props for just showing up. Most of the other members have degrees in music, which can feel pretty intimidating because I can't even read music and don't even know anyone nearby who can. I always have a good time with them, though! There are many openly queer folks in the choir, and it makes me happy to be surrounded by all these beautiful queer people and allies living their best lives.

I also finished watching Good Omens yesterday, and I fully intend to make a separate post about that with all the spoilers. For now, my short, non-spoilery reaction is that I loved it!

Cruel summer?

I just realized that I've had this journal for ten years now. The official anniversary was on July 22nd, but today is close enough. Let's hope that I continue posting even more in the next ten years!

The heat has been really getting to me. It's pretty hard to concentrate, and I just feel scattered overall. It feels like time is going by really fast, and I'm not able to accomplish as much as I would like. We don't have AC, and it really sucks! Earlier in the summer, I was house-sitting for my aunt who does have AC, but since then, I've been trying to cope without it.

One of the things I have accomplished is finishing my assignment for [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles. I am pretty pleased with it, and more than that, I am happy to be writing again. I love writing drabbles for their minuteness and the need to make every word count. In that way, they remind me of poetry. I hope to write some treats as well if I can get my mind to cooperate. I am really excited! :D

Also, I still need to finish Good Omens.

Barbie movie (no spoilers)

I finally went to see the Barbie movie yesterday. Overall, I enjoyed it. I was expecting something like Life-Size or Disney's Enchanted, and that's basically what we got--except even more meta and existential. I had read that was what it would be like, but I still wasn't ready for it! I'd really like to see more of Greta Gerwig's work now since I also enjoyed her version of Little Women (Which is actually the only version of Little Women that I am familiar with in any medium).

I also absolutely loved the soundtrack. I was listening to the songs before the movie came out and will continue doing so now that I've seen it. I could list my favorites, but I would probably list half of the songs in the process. I may make a post about it later.

The movie was pretty quotable, too, and I plan to watch it again once it comes out on streaming! Allan was definitely my favorite and weird Barbie was fun too.

I don't really have anything else to say about it for now. In the meantime, check out these articles about the movie:

Queer Easter eggs in the movie (spoilers)

It is not an explicitly queer film, but the Barbie movie does have quite a few queer references.

The discontinued dolls in the Barbie movie

As the link says, this is an article about the various discontinued and controversial dolls featured in the movie. I knew about Earring Magic Ken and pregnant Midge, but I had no idea about the history of the others.

Sunshine Challenge 2023 Prompt #1

Prompt 1: Iris
They can represent faith, hope, courage, wisdom and admiration. Specific flower colors attach further meanings to the pretty blooms. Purple iris brings a message of wisdom and compliments, while a bouquet of blue iris blossoms speak of hope and faith.

Bonus Prompt: Pink Rose

Please feel free to respond in whichever way comes naturally to you, be it thoughts that you share or a work that you create. If you’d like a more specific idea to kick things off: share a poem or drabble that reminds you of the Iris theme.

Finally, I'm doing this! I've looked at the other prompts and ideas are brewing for those too.

For this one, I wrote a Night Vale fic.

Things I'd like to accomplish

So much for posting more consistently. I'm posting this so I can get back into the habit and because I tend to get easily distracted. I have been reading and commenting here, though.

- Post about the fic that I've been reading. Yes, I've actually been reading fic again!
- Get caught up with [community profile] sunshine_challenge.
- Finish reading the chapter of that fic I was in the middle of.

On a positive note, I have been meeting my exercise goals pretty consistently on most days and coping with the summer heat pretty well.

Baby, I was born to survive

As promised, here are some of the good things that did happen to me during my all too long journaling hiatus:

  • Last year, I saw Lady Gaga live at Dodger's Stadium. I Love her ♥ I sang along and allowed myself to get lost in the experience. Plus, there was this kid behind me screaming about how Lady Gaga saved his life--that's priceless.
  • I joined a choir; I am a fiend for choral music. Also, my conductor was this really cool non-binary person who has really great taste in music Sadly, they are moving to Washington state, but they will be coming back to SoCal periodically to work with us again.
  • I saw the musical Six about the six wives of Henry VIII. It's fun, and the music is really catchy.
  • I worked on my university's scholarly journal.
  • I have completed all of my coursework for my Master's degree. All I need to do now is take the comprehensive exams to graduate.
  • I finally got to go to this great okonomiyaki place called Chinchikurin.
  • I had kitsune udon for the first time.
  • I became obsessed with What We Do in the Shadows.
  • Ooh, I also saw Hadestown last fall, and it is now one of my favorite musicals.

There's probably more that I am forgetting as life has been very eventful in both good an bad ways. I plan to make a post about the books and music I've been enjoying too.

I'm alive!

I realize now how seemingly ominous it is to post about getting Covid and then stop posting for a year. Even if my last post was about getting better, anything could have happened. The good news is that we all survived Covid, but...

CW for death, Covid, and mental health )

I'm much better now, but it was a real struggle getting through last year. I stopped doing a lot of things (like visiting DW), but that wasn't good for me in the long run. I'm back because I missed this place and am unhappy about what is going on with Twitter and Reddit these days. At any rate, I am glad to be back and will have a happier post soon because some good things did actually happen to me since my last post, but I want to save them for their own entry.

What did I miss?

My family and I got COVID, but we're all okay!

....it was not fun. My birthday was yesterday, and I spent it in quarantine. 0/5 stars--would not recommend! I started to feel sick on Tuesday and did not feel like doing much of anything for about a week. I mostly slept and tried to listen to audio books or stream TV, but I had a hard time just focusing on those things because I felt so out of it. I'm mostly feeling better--which is quite a relief--but I'm still not 100% back to normal. It was really frustrating because we were all vacced and everything, but I hadn't gotten the chance to get my booster shot. I'm going to get it as soon as possible now. Even though my mom was boosted, she *still* got sick. I guess that's just how it is now with Omicron (which is probably what we had based on the sore throats), and I feel like it was bound to happen one of these days since my mom works with young children who are not old enough to get vaccinated. Still, it's frustrating because we try to be safe and had avoided it for almost two years.

Since I didn't feel like doing much, I have some comments and posts to catch up on here on DW. I missed most everything since the 11th. I need to catch up with [community profile] snowflake_challenge as well. I was thinking of doing the latest challenge tonight, but I'm not sure since I have to get up tomorrow for online training at a reasonable hour for the job I started last fall but have never mentioned here.

Well...

My mom has Covid. She's a few days shy of 65, but she is vaccinated and boosted. She will probably be okay, but my grandma and I have also been exposed now. My birthday is on Monday next week; this is the worst birthday gift I've ever received!

In other news, I did sign up for [community profile] getyourwordsout. Anyone else? Wish me luck!

I realize there is a bit of mood whiplash between these two announcements, but I wasn't sure how else to put it and wanted to end on a lighter note.

Snowflake Challenge #3

Challenge #3

In your own space, put some favorite characters into an AU, fuse some favorite canons together, talk about your favorite AU/fusion tropes, or tell us why AU/fusions aren’t your cup of tea. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I know that AUs aren't everyone's cup of tea, but I love them. Phantom of the Opera was one of my earlier fandoms about ten years ago (Ten years old... does anyone get this reference?), and it basically ran on AUs. If you were any kind of Erik/Christine shipper, you pretty much neede AUs for any fic given how the original musical/book both end. Plus, it was fun to see how people could make the story work in a modern setting. My favorite AUs back in the day were written by Quiet2885, but I haven't read any of them in years.

I think my favorite kind of AUs are the canon divergent ones, though. It's fun to imagine how the story and characters would be different if just one thing changed--or many things! It reminds me of that wonderful time when I am in the middle of a new canon and my mind is flooded with possibilities of what could happen next--like when we were all reading HP for the first time and tons of theories were floating around. It feels like the possibilities are endless, but eventually, the canon must settle on one.

Also, I wanted to write a Fallen London/Night Vale fusion back in the day, but I was intimidated by the scope of Fallen London canon.

ETA: As for crossovers, I really want to read some Good Omens/The Good Place crossovers. If you know any good ones, please rec them! I'm interested to see how to reconcile the different approaches to the afterlife/deity/religion.

Challenge #2

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Hm, let me see.... I have a lot I would like to accomplish in theory, but I don't want to overwhelm myself and set myself up for failure. I tend to view my goals as all or nothing, which isn't the best. Maybe that should be my first goal?

That seems like enough for now. I can add more later if I feel like it. A lot of these echo my goals from last year, but I hope I can have better luck with them this time around. I *did* manage to socialize more last year, but most of it wasn't on DW. I also feel like I am in a better headspace this year, which bodes well.

Snowflake Challenge #15

Challenge #15
In your own space, Talk about Your Snowflake Experience. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable
doing so.

I'm glad that I participated in the challenge again because it helped give me inspiration to post regularly on DW after a long hiatus. I got to talk to new fannish people (I really put effort into it this time) and learned about others. Although I had many other things on my mind during January, I'm happy that I carved out enough time to do as many challenges as I did. My favorite challenge was reviving old memes. ^^; I can't remember when I last did [community profile] snowflake_challenge, but I think it was back when challenges were every day? It is somewhere in my archives... Anyway, the pace of every other day kept me from feeling overwhelmed. When did the schedule change? I swear that there used to be challenges every day, but I can look it up later.

I really needed it this year. Not only did I want to post more, but I also have felt pretty lonely during the pandemic. Before the pandemic, I had grad classes to attend that gave me the chance to get out and be around people. I'm still finishing up my MA and taking Zoom classes, but it's not the same. Without them, the people I talk to on a regular basis are my older family members whose politics drive me up the wall. While I'm trying to get to know my classmates also, this gave me an opportunity for some much needed fannish interaction. I want to get back into fandom and start writing again, and this challenge offered a nice start to those goals. The world has felt increasingly scary and out of control over the past year, and I'm grateful that [community profile] snowflake_challenge is still around to provide some feeling of normalcy.

I may go back and do some of the earlier challenges that I skipped, but we'll see.
