my thread here

I just spotted this meme on [community profile] fandomcalendar, and I thought I'd give it a try since I hardly ever link to my fic on this journal. Go read my inconsequential fluff and angst and leave feedback if you can. Concrit is welcome and encouraged!

I have also come to the conclusion that I don't need to bother with tumblr to enjoy fandom. There is a lot of fun and friends here if you know how to look. Sure, I may be missing out on new shiny things on tumblr, but I'm not going to be too upset about being active there. This may change in the future, but if DW stays as my main fandom hangout, that will be okay.

On the other hand, I've been kicking around the idea of turning [tumblr.com profile] anelusivedreamer into a writing journal. The posting interface still gives me grief, but time will tell, I suppose.

Do I contradict myself? Well then, I contradict myself. I am large; I contain multitudes!

I have gone to bed after 1 am consistently for the last few days, which does not bode well for when I will have to be awake and functioning before 10 AM next month. -_-; I'm still wondering how July is almost over and where the time has gone. Time has always been my enemy, but maybe we will be able to reconcile someday.

Last weekend, I house-sat for my aunt and uncle, which meant AC for a few days! *cheers* Naturally, it started to cool down outside just when I finally got access to the air conditioning. I'm home now, but I was able to enjoy it for a few days at least. It's so much easier to accomplish things when you're not hot and tired all the time.

So, after my previous post, I actually did go to the fair on Saturday and had a lovely time.Read more... )

I also signed up for the [community profile] hp_creatures fest, so hopefully I can get started on that. I will be in Oregon Thursday through Saturday for unpleasant personal reasons, but I'd like to get started before then. I have until October, but it is better that I use my time wisely, especially before school starts and consumes me. I need all the help that I can get when it comes to actually sitting down and writing anything that's over ~500 words. At least it's a pairing that I feel relatively comfortable with.

I'm supposed to go to a HP trivia night tonight at 7:30; my life is so interesting now. XD;

This looks like fun. ^^; I got it from [personal profile] inkstone.

Comment with a fanfic trope and, if you'd like, a character/pairing, and I will tell you:
• how likely I am to write it
• A few lines of theoretical fic

It's already a few days into 2017, so I think it's time to dust off this old journal and post for once! Since I enjoyed doing [community profile] snowflake_challenge so much last year, I think it will be a great way to start off this new year in a positive light.

Day 1

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you
feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if
you feel comfortable doing so.

I felt a bit weird about this challenge this year because I have yet to write something substantial, but I understand that is not the point of this challenge. Still, it should be pretty easy to rec my stuff this year because I believe that I have nearly everything reposted on AO3.

All under a convenient cut )

That was actually kind of fun! I'm glad I did it. ^^;

I was up half the night reading a Night Vale fic. I can't even remember the last time that I was so addicted to a fic. I'm guessing it was back in my POTO fandom days because I don't think I've read anything as long since then. This one was over 50K, and IMHO, Cecil was a little OOC in parts, but I still enjoyed the heck out of it. I read all of the available chapters, but it's a WIP, so I'll probably be reading it for time to come.

Fic Under here )

Despite being up late, I managed to miss Hunter x Hunter twice on Toonami. Unfortunately, I had to go out and eat Mexican food with family at the time I would normally watch it. I just decided to wait until it is rerun instead of recording it. I have really been enjoying it for the past few weeks, though. The dynamics between the characters are really starting to remind me of YYH, which is always a good thing.

I've done some of my homework today, but the entire time I have been anxiously awaiting my assignment for [community profile] space_swap. ;3 The exchange is going to be smaller than I originally thought. Apparently, there will be 25 participants including myself. I'm guessing that I'll be writing something for Doctor Who or the Star Wars prequels because I'm the only one who requested Madoka. I'm probably not going to get a Madoka fic either, but that's okay because I haven't even read any of the fics that are already out there.

Signing up for this exchange has made me wish that there was a fantasy-based counterpart. Maybe that is too vague of a subject, but I'm tempted to start one of my own. If I did, I might want to call it magical exchange, so that it contains some kind of magic in the fandoms as a theme. I would be tempted to call it Equivalent Exchange, but I'm sure that something already has that name and that it might be too specific to FMA. Besides, is the alchemy in FMA really magic? From what I remember of the 2003 anime (even though I have watched Brotherhood), alchemy is supposed to be a kind of science that just doesn't exist in our world. I would want my exchange to be focused on real magic rather than technology that is so advanced that it appears to be magic. There is a name for that, right? Magic that is really just new technology? I must investigate...

Since I've been varying levels of sick this week, my spring break has evaporated away like melted snow. I planned on updating my journal all week, but I'm just getting to it now after two other failed attempts. I hope this writing will do me some good.

Once again, I signed up for a fanwork exchange against my better judgment, but hey, it's writing. Just in the nick of time, too! I totally forgot about [community profile] space_swap with the full intention of doing a leisurely and well-thought out sign up earlier this week, but I didn't realize that sign ups were closing today until last night. I got my sign up in, but I was unable to take the time to put prompts or do not wants, so I'm bracing for anything. I just hope that I get something other than smut, but if I don't, it's my own fault for not planning ahead. Fortunately, I do not have many hard-and-fast triggers, but I would prefer that my fics don't get any darker or more adult than the original source material that I requested. Just in case my spacer is reading this, I am not down with incest or underage.

I also signed up for [community profile] myoldfandom, but I have plenty of time to fiddle with the sign up for that and write a proper letter with prompts and everything. At least, I have until the 25th.

Anyway, I want to write more about my fannish activities, but this is just a brief recap of the little that I've done this week. I also need to post my fics from [community profile] chocolateboxcomm now that they've been revealed for over a month now.
komadori: (Default)
I received my [community profile] chocolateboxcomm gifts last night and read both of them this morning. With one main gift and a treat, I feel like I really got more than I deserved. The FMA fic that I received was over 3,000 words! I wasn't even expecting a FMA fic at all, so that kind of knocked me off my feet. The Harry Potter fic was a real surprise as well. I'd never even thought of Millicent/Hermione until I requested it, so I was happy to read something new. I guess these can both count as rare pairings, too. I've already left comments and kudos, so I hope that my mystery authors continue to get lots of love for their work.

Fullmetal Alchemist and Harry Potter )

Fortunately, I was able to give two gifts in return. I've already gotten some lovely comments and kudos, so I guess that means that they don't suck!

What next? [community profile] halfamoon is extending its run until the end of February, so I may do something for that. I'm also seriously considering participating in [community profile] once_upon_fic.
komadori: (Default)
No, I never saw the movie that I'm quoting right now, but perhaps I should.

As the previous post indicates, I finished [community profile] snowflake_challenge. The only problem is that I forgot to post about it over there, so I should probably do that today. By some miracle, I was able to fulfill my assignment for [community profile] chocolateboxcomm and write a treat as well. Both of my works exceed the 300 word minimum, and I'm desperately hoping that they don't suck. I did not go looking for a beta for either, but I proofread them as best I could. Now, it won't be much longer before they are revealed anonymously. I wrote for one fandom that I've written for before and one that I never wrote for because it always intimidated me. That could apply to almost anything because of how little I've written so far. I would very much like to write another treat, but we'll see how time goes as I have many more important things to do in my real life.

AO3 says that I have two gifts waiting for me. :D I guess that I must have picked fandoms that were easy to write for because I had my main gift and another treat uploaded before the treat list went up. I'm guessing that they're either Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia, Doctor Who, or Fullmetal Alchemist. Unfortunately, no one except me offered or requested Welcome to Night Vale. Regardless, I'm still very excited because I've never participated in an exchange before. It's just so brilliant to have one like this around Valentine's Day. Even if I don't have some great love of my own to look forward to, I can share a little love with my fellow fans through my writing.

Day 14

In your own space, share your love for something fannish: a trope, cliché, kink, motif, theme, format, or fandom.

Is fanart about the Avengers being fluffy and domestic your jam? Are tentacle fics your thing? How about podfics that have characters talking dirty? Is
your Pinterest filled with images of knitted fanart? Make a post about it! Squee to your heart's content, tell us why you love it, gives us some examples.

Then, leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. You might be surprised to find out
that other people are head over heels about those things too. :D

I had to look through a few of the other posts, but I finally feel like I have an answer: AUs.

I haven't read as much of them as I would like to say, but I love the idea of wondering "what if" or putting our beloved characters in different situations. How would they react if this, this, and this were different? If you're not happy with canon, fix it. If you are happy with canon, imagine how it would be if it had gone in a different direction. I love any kind of AU--no matter how far they deviate from the source material. Sure, there are some fandoms where I'd rather see something set in canon, but for the most part, I enjoy the chance to see what kinds of new situations and worlds the characters can inhabit. This is probably one of the tropes I've loved the longest because I would always love to let my childish imagination wonder what would happen next or how the story would be different if something else had happened.

I think what really got me interested in AUs was the Phantom of the Opera modern retellings, especially those of Quiet2885. There really is not enough time in canon to squeeze in too much fic. You could set it before Raoul appears, but Christine doesn't meet Erik face-to-face (or, in this case, face-to-mask) until after that. If you are an Erik/Christine shipper at all, you need to make it an AU because no matter how much Love Never Dies wants to tell us otherwise, they do not end up together. That's not even taking into consideration the original Leroux novel. When All is Lost is the longest fic I've ever read, and it is pure AU. Although I haven't read it in about five years, I remember loving it to bits at the time.

Day 13

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your
post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Better late than never is in the spirit of [community profile] snowflake_challenge. In fact, they wouldn’t even consider this late because it is such a laid-back challenge, so here are my recs. Since this week was a little overwhelming, I decided to save this post for the weekend. Anyway, I will rec more than three things because of the delay and my enthusiasm for this challenge.

Four Recs: Harry Potter, Welcome to Night Vale, and Vampire Chronicles )

Basically, I just raided the recs I had listed on AO3. ^^; All of these are highly recommended even though I do not feel up to writing anything about them.

[community profile] chocolateboxcomm sign-ups closed last night, so I'm currently waiting for my assignment with bated breath. Needless to say, I'm excited. I hope that everything goes well and that I will be able to create something good for my recipient. I'd like to write treats as well, but we'll see how time goes.

Day 5

Leave feedback for a fanwork. Or multiple fanworks. It can be as simple as I liked this to a detailed list of all the things you loved about the fanwork.
The key is to leave some sort of feedback.

If you've already left feedback in the course of a previous challenge, it totally counts. But you're free to leave more feedback.

Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!" If you feel so inclined, leave a link to the fanwork you left feedback for
so others can check it out.

I did it! I left a review for this gen TFA fic. There are still a ton of other fics that I want to read and review, though. I want to read more Yuletide and some of the other things that have been posted to [community profile] snowflake_challenge when I get the chance. I may update this post if I review anything else today.

Edit: I just left a comment for this wonderful Chronicles of Narnia fic about Susan. See, I told ya I'd be back with more ;D Hooray for awesome women being awesome!

Day 4

In your own space, create a fanwork. Make a drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. Arts and crafts. Draft a critical essay
about a particular media. Put together a picspam or a fanmix. Write a review of a Broadway show, a movie, a concert, a poetry reading, a museum trip, a
you-should-be-listening-to-this-band essay. Compose some limericks, haikus, free-form poetry, 5-word stories. Document a particular bit of real person
canon. Take some pictures. Draw a stick-figure comic. Create something. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if
you feel comfortable doing so.

I love this challenge so much because of the sheer variety of fanworks allowed. That being said, I have a regular old fanfic to share for this one. I wrote it last night with this challenge in mind, but I did not realize that this would be the challenge for day four. I'm so happy that I posted my first Night Vale fic even if it is short.

Waiting for the Bus in the Rain (344 words) by Komadori
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Welcome to Night Vale

Additional Tags: AU, Ficlet, cecilos - Freeform, Rain, Caught in the Rain, First Meeting, beginning of a relationship, Oneshot, A Gentle Fall of Rain, Homesickness

AU Cecil finds himself in a strange city when it starts to rain.

If I come up with anything else, I'll add it here. This challenge has me inspired!

Day 03

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you
feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if
you feel comfortable doing so.

This is actually much easier than yesterday's challenge. It's not that I have so many fanworks that I'm proud of, but I have so few fanworks to choose from. I guess this is another reminder that I should write more.

Their Dark Waltz - I wrote this during the height of my Phantom of the Opera obsession. I fell for this fandom fast and hard after I saw the musical, but this was the only offspring of that love that ever saw the light of day. I was very proud of it at the time, and looking back on the reviews, people seemed to like it as well. Now, I'm a little worried that it may have come a little too close to purple prose at points, but I wanted the story to have a dream-like quality. I was actually much more of an Erik/Christine shipper, but I had no problem with writing Erik/Meg. Since I wrote it so long ago, I never imported it to AO3. Maybe I should do so. I also thought of continuing it. I always imagined a second chapter about Meg and Erik's relationship where she tries to fill Christine's shoes. Then, the third chapter would be about Meg and Erik getting married and Christine serving as a witness.

The Bings' First Family Christmas - Who would have ever thought that I would write Friends fanfic? If I can get my muse to cooperate, there will be more where that came from. Anyway, I felt confident writing this because I've watched Friends reruns so many times. The idea came to me when I was watching said reruns late at night, and I just had to write it. Once again, I never imported it to AO3. I'm proud of it because it managed to evoke that cute quality I had in mind. This is Chandler/Monica fluff, btw.

Pansy's Pet - For once, this is something that is actually on AO3, which is strange because I wrote it before either of the above fics. Since I originally posted it on LJ for a hp100 drabble challenge, it was easy to import. Anyway, this is one-sided Draco/Hermione. I'm not really into the ship, but the idea just caught me. I'm proud of it because of how I interpreted the "pet" prompt.

Since all creative works are allowed, I will include some non-fics as well...

My fic recs on AO3 - At least, this is how I think you link to recs on AO3. There may be some regular old bookmarks thrown in, but I loved all of my recs. Go read them!

My GoodReads reviews - I don't write reviews for every book or even close to it, but I'm trying to do more reviews. It would be nice to know that people are actually reading them. Anyway, you will need a GoodReads account in order to read them if you are interested.

The door was thrust open and a patch a moonlight appeared on the floor. The weary traveled scurried in and hastily shut the door behind him. I could tell he was put off-guard by my dimly-lit room. His eyes focused fearfully on my own. They must have drawn his attention quickly, because they were the brightest lights in the room.

He continued to stare at me without a word.

“Why have you come, Mr. Daae?” I asked coolly.

This did nothing for his speechlessness. I smirked. Did he really think I would let just anyone see me? My spies were everywhere, ready to collect information on anyone who dared to enter my forest. This humble man was no exception.

“You have a daughter, Mr. Daae,” I interrupted.

“I understand that you have some sort of musical ambition--”

“I am a violinist, sir,” he said. It was his time to interrupt me. This man was obviously very desperate. Few men would dare to even speak to me, but interrupt me? Brave soul!

“I can admire that,” I answered. “I am a man of the arts as well.”

Somewhere beyond my dark world, a a flaxen-haired child slumbered. She dreamed visions of an Angel of Music. She dreamt below an open window, unaware that her destiny was no longer her own. She dreamt without knowing her soul now belonged to the dark forest outside her window. Christine became mine at that very moment.
